Alter Holzstich wood engraving of Stromboli in 1880 from my collection. I have not removed this from it's protective sleeve or from the mat that cuts off the two sides. When I do, I sill scan this so as to get a better view of the piece. Notice the Lateen sailed boat in the foreground. This is more interesting to me than the rest of the picture.
In a wood engraving, the picture is scratched out on a finely sanded block of hard wood, then ink is rubbed into the scratches and the block wiped clean. A press pushes the paper onto the block and into the ink.
